BIOPHILIC EXPLORATION OF THE SUBLIME
2014-17
The Biophilia Hypothesis was introduced by the theorist Edward O. Wilson and suggests an instinctive bond between people and other living systems.
Collecting and examining found images and personal archives of the sublime, my work focuses on Edward Wilson’s theory by exploring our biophilic relationship with the natural world. I believe that what seems like chaos and random occurrence on our planet, actually has structure, codes and patterns. The features of our world, from galactic to microscopic, are all consistent with these patterns – and we are but a mere part of it.
Infinite, immeasurable, incomprehensible, yet eternal and peaceful, the sublime in nature provokes an emotional and spiritual reaction within us. Like the poet William Wordsworth, I use the sublime in nature as a way to seek enlightenment. As I continue to study subject matter surrounding nature, molecular science, fractals and cymatics, the more I see how life is so finely tuned and perfected with these ever repeated patterns and visual similarities. This along with certain overwhelming emotions makes me question as to whether life came to existence purely by chance.
